In the first photo, the rule of thirds is followed because the focus is out of the center of the frame. I really like the effect that backlighting has in this shot as well as the contrasting colors between the orangutan and the greenery and stone. A "c" or "L" shape is acheived in this shot. I would not do anything to change this shot.
